Dr. Ritacca gave a fascinating talk about the various meanings of the suffrage movement and passage of the 19th amendment for different groups of American Women. She made a case that the story of the suffrage movement is much more complex than most people realize. Some women gained voting rights well before the 19th amendment while many were not able to exercise that right until the civil rights movement. |

Sandy Krasner is an engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab; he makes sure that the computer systems on the spacecraft and the Earth all talk to each other. In 38 years at the Lab, he has worked on missions to every planet from Mercury to Saturn, plus the occasional comet or asteroid. He is currently working on InSight, the next Mars lander which will land on Mars just after Thanksgiving in 2018. He is also working on NISAR, a joint radar mission with the Indian Space Research Organization, which will map the entire land surface of the Earth every 12 days. Sandy volunteers with the Pasadena/Foothills Chapter of the Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL). CCL lobbies Congress to pass a revenue-neutral Carbon Fee and Dividend. Many economists believe that Carbon Fee and Dividend is the most effective way to put a price on carbon emissions, and use market forces to address climate change. A CCL volunteer started the congressional Climate Solutions Caucus, which now includes 24 Republicans and 24 Democratic representatives. He also volunteers with Californians for a Carbon Tax (CalFACT). CalFACT lobbies Caliornia legislators to pass climate change legislation.

MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC IN SOUTH PASADENA
SPEAKER AND MUSICIAN: BRAD COLERICK
MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC IN SOUTH PASADENA
SPEAKER AND MUSICIAN: BRAD COLERICK
Songwriter, recording artist, producer and entrepreneur Brad Colerick talked about his career in music. Colerick has worked alongside such icons as BB King, Buddy Guy, and many others during his 30 years in the music business. He previewed songs from his upcoming release, “Nine-Ten-Thirty.” The title cut from the CD is filled with little-slice-of-life scenes familiar to residents of South Pasadena – from the parrots, the bubble man at the weekly farmers’ market, to the longtime 710 Freeway fight. Some of the talented local musicians who contributed to the project include David Plenn, Tim Fleming, Sally Dworsky and Guillermo Guzman, who co-produced the DC with Colerick.
|
In 2009, Colerick brought his musical sounds to South Pasadena when he first launched Wine & Song, a Wednesday night gathering of musicians who showcase their talents at the Arroyo Seco Golf Course. Since then, he has played host to more than 300 touring artists from around the globe. The music has been such a success that a Thursday night jazz and blues night has been added at the same location, now referred to as the Blue Guitar Room. The music is offered in the former pro shop at the Arroyo Seco Golf Course.
