SPEAKER: ​Nick Kimball, new Assistant City Manager/Chief Financial Officer
Nick gave us an overview of our city's financial status, goals for the future, and answered a number of questions from the audience.  Here are just a few of the comments he made:
  • Both he and the city manager are committed to good governance, accountability and transparency
  • The city has a relatively healthy reserve but there are budget threats:
    1. Self insurance fund - we have a number of lawsuits particularly related to pothole and tree accidents.  Going forward we need to manage our tree canopy which causes damage to cars and sidewalks.
    2. Vehicles & equipment - in the past, these were replaced adhoc way past their useful life.  We need to incorporate the cost of equipment into operational budgets for better planning and accountability.​
    3. Capital improvements- we have a backlog of capital that have been funded.  We need to move forward and get these done before asking residents to approve a bond measure.  The city needs to "establish trust before asking for more money" 
  • The Finance department is finally all staffed up and financial reporting will be timely going forward.

SPEAKER: MAYOR JANET BRUAN
Overview of various city priorities and how the city is moving forward and overall status on some of the major projects and issues currently being addressed.

Mayor Braun viewed the city's current priorities as 4 main topics:
Finance
Infrastructure improvements
Housing issues (including Housing Element and Caltrans houses) 
Governance (incoming CM, role of Commissions)

Speaker: The New South Pasadena Fire Chief, Gregory Lloyd
We are very grateful to Fire Chief Gregory Lloyd, who came on a Saturday to speak to us,  He shared some fascinating information about the complexities of running a small city fire department.  Below is just a small sampling of some of the information he shared:
  • His job is to look forward, strengthen and prepare for the future and to ensure public safety.
  • Recruitment and retention of firefighters is a struggle for all fire departments.  We are down 5 fire personnel.
  • All our firefighters are paramedics. 
  • The response time is less than 5 min.
  • Our city is part of the Verdugo District Dispatch System which provides mutual aid from the fire departments in the cities that surround us. We are partners and work as one.  
  • In the event of a major disaster such as an earthquake, residents will initially need to be self-sufficient which is why it is important for neighborhoods to have block captains,
  • get CERT training, and plan with our neighbors ahead of time.  (Next CERT training is in January)
  • There an app with the best source for fires for all of the western U.S. - https://app.watchduty.org/
  • He will be taking a close look at the Monterey Hills - weed abatement, getting other fire departments to know our hills, and an evacuation program for the hills.
